Andreas Reckwitz
Das Ende der Illusionen
Suhrkamp: €18

Robert Macfarlane
Underland
Penguin €13,80
Im Unterland
Penguin Verlag €24
While the year 2020 brought many unpleasantries, a dearth of literary excellence is not among them, and the fact that I can say this with a straight face in a review of a non-fiction work is notable in itself. Macfarlane is a marvelous story-teller and stylist, using this ability to the utmost to present the land underneath our feet. He brings together topics as disparate as neutrino measurement and prehistoric burial rituals, underworld mythology and potash mining operations - and yes, Merlin Sheldrake and his fungi (see our previous Adventskalender on the 10th) also show up. You can read this book for the sheer beauty of its descriptions, for the single-sentence stories, or simply for the immersion in a world that is close and yet so remote, you will come away satisfied regardless.
